The Colombian LoCo Team has been very actively preparing for this event, they even lined up some sponsors. There will be 2 separate conference tracks and one workshop track, and the event will be streamed live. This looks to be a lot more than an informal gathering! All details are available on the website.

It’s exciting to see local business and enthusiasts getting together around Ubuntu. Make sure you file the registration form if you’re attending.

What a week!!!

The minutes of the meeting are now online, thanks to Hollman Enciso and Julián Alarcón for getting this going!

This is one of many steps to get any legislation in place, so it’s an important day in Free Software history for Colombia ! This is the second time after 1992 that such legislation is attempted, and I consider this to be great news, although the general intent of this legislation is presented as letting free software co-exist with proprietary software.

I wish I could have been there, this is truly a time for changes and progress in Colombia and I am excited about all the opportunities opening there. Apparently the session was recorded and is available on video, it will be interesting to watch it and see how this project was presented.

En este momento hay muchos sentimientos de frustración, impotencia, incluso culpabilidad, pero al mismo tiempo satisfacción, al menos ínfima, de poder ser solidario de alguna manera en esta tragedia. Es como un puño en el estómago. En fin… decidan.

Este video, realizado hace algunas semanas, adquiere una triste vigencia hoy, en vista de la noticia de la muerte de 11 de los ex-diputados del Valle secuestrados desde abril de 2002.

El corto fue realizado con familiares de Juan Carloz Arbeláez, uno de los líderes asesinados y Sigifredo López, el que señalan como sobreviviente.

Espero de corazón que estas familias puedan descansar y que cese la manipulación del dolor para la guerra.

I am really excited that the spanish subtitling was possible after I managed to obtain a release of the original english transcript under a Creative Commons BY licence. Getting the transcript was the easy part but translating it to spanish was a huge effort by a few dedicated individuals – credit goes to Gustavo Gonzalez at Kazak for his dedication to have this completed!

Même si ça ne veut pas dire que tout va pour le mieux, l’arrivée de milliers de touristes à Carthagène pendant les prochains mois a de quoi rendre fier (ou nerveux) tout responsable de la sécurité civile d’une région.

Surtout quand on voit sur le site du Ministère des Affaires Étrangères du Canada qu’on “recommande d’éviter tout voyage dans ce(s) pays.[...] sauf à Carthagène et dans les îles San Andrés et Providencia.”. Ah, une chance

Je ne doute pas une seconde que ces touristes seront en sécurité, vu l’importance de la délégation qui prépare ces activités, ainsi que les enjeux économiques tant pour la région que pour l’opérateur canadien. Pour y avoir été pendant un mois cet été, à Cali et Bucaramanga, avec ma conjointe et ma fille, je crois qu’il n’y a pas grand chose à craindre à part le hasard – un peu comme à Montréal ou toute autre grande ville.

Mais il me reste un arrière-goût de “repas-instant”, de coup médiatique et de manipulation de l’image de la Colombie. J’entends souvent des critiques au gouvernement actuel au sujet des informations qui sont véhiculées à l’étranger, un peu pour tenir tranquille ce peuple qui meurt d’envie d’avoir une vie normale.

Les bulletins de nouvelles régionaux consacrent un espace fou aux nouvelles les plus frivoles, à côté des drames humains les plus inédits. Des attachés de presse sont dépêchés à l’étranger pour écrire “des bonnes nouvelles” dans les média internationaux (oui, qq’un que je connais) et le président envoie un communiqué spécial aux consulats, ambassades et délégations à l’étranger en précisant les mots exacts à utiliser pour décrire la guerre quotidienne menée par le citoyen comun – tantôt pour survivre, tantôt pour rester honête.

Je constate que certaines choses vont mieux, oui, mais je pressens que la Colombie deviendra bientôt mon endroit préféré pour profiter du “all-included”, des bons deals sur le linge et la bouffe, et de belles plages bien nettoyées comme on nous les vends (voir: Mexique ou Cuba) – et c’est la saison!
