I remember the stressing situation in the Guadalinex presentation at UDS.

We started with a big wide-screen Sony Vaio but nothing seemed to work (neither reboot).

I spent a few hours learning how to configure my little Vaio TX. It's a bit tricky, but you can use different resolutions in both lcd and external vga.
I forgot to save my X.org scripts before reinstalling Guadalinex, so I lost this nice configuration.

Luckily I brought an old Compaq EVO with me, that worked perfectly after a reboot.

Anyway I agree with Fabian. If you plan to show a presentation, get prepared for Murphy law effects !

If you use the fglrx drivers you may also consider to force crt1 on all the time: "aticonfig --force-monitor=crt1", so you wont have to use "enable-monotor" every time you need it.

The following two things usually help a lot if you are running the curs^Wnice fglrx drivers from ATI^WAMD:

sudo aticonfig --enable-monitor=lvds,crt1

enables the second display on my Thinkpad, while

sudo aticonfig --enable-monitor=lvds,none

disables it again.

If you happen to have problems with the wrong resolution, try the xrandr tool (found in the package with the same name). Simply calling this will give you a list of supported resolutions. You can simply change the resolution with

xrandr --size

where is the number given in the first column of the xrandr output.

HTH, Carsten

PS: Final note: Recently I came across a few projectors which were really bad at low resolutions and only worked fine with (much) higher resolutions, e.g. 1600x1200 was fine, but I got no sync on 800x600. Weird, but worth a try.
